Start with the kind of boat, then the boat. Gulets and motor yachts come with a crew; sailing yachts and catamarans you can take yourself.
Gulets
Broad wooden hulls built on this coast, four to eight en-suite cabins, and a crew who cook three meals a day. The classic Turkish blue cruise, and still the best value on the water for a group of eight or more.
Motor yachts
Twenty knots instead of eight. On a motor yacht Rhodes is a morning, not a decision, and a week covers three gulfs instead of one. Air conditioning that never stops, and stabilisers that hold the boat still at anchor.
Sailing yachts
Bareboat with an ICC, RYA, IYT or ASA certificate, or take a skipper for the first two days. Modern monohulls from 45 to 51 feet, handed over with a chart briefing that takes an hour and is worth three.
Catamarans
No heel, shallow draft and a foredeck of trampolines. Nothing slides off the table, nobody feels sick, and 1.3 metres of draft opens the shallow turquoise corners a monohull has to look at from a distance.
