Windlass and deck gear

Windlass and deck gear

The windlass that will not lift, the chain counter that lies, the gypsy that slips a link every turn. The one failure that ends a day at anchor and cannot be worked around.

Before we get there

Stop using it. A windlass that is drawing current but not turning is burning its motor, and the foot switch is usually the cheap part that failed. Buoy the chain and call.

What usually goes wrong

01

Will not lift

Foot switch, then the solenoid, then the cable run, then the motor. In that order, because that is the order of cost.

02

Chain slips on the gypsy

Wrong gypsy for the chain, or a worn one. We measure the chain before ordering anything; half the slipping we see is 8 mm chain on a 10 mm gypsy.

03

Bow roller and chain locker

Chain that castles in the locker jams the windlass from below. A taller locker or a shorter drop fixes it permanently; we make the part here.

Passerelle, davits and gates

Hydraulic rams, gas struts and the stainless that carries them. Made and welded at our own yard rather than ordered and waited on.
