Furler jammed
Halyard wrap nine times out of ten, and it is a five-minute fix from a bosun's chair. The tenth is a dry bearing in the drum that needs the foil off.

Before we get there
If the furler has jammed with sail out, bear away, ease the sheet and stop winching. Every extra pull wraps the halyard tighter round the foil and turns a rigger's afternoon into a lift out of the mast.

Rigging inspection
Aloft with a magnifier on every swage, plus tension readings on cap and lower shrouds. On this coast, ten years or 20,000 miles is when the standing rigging comes off, and insurers know it.

Winch service
Stripped, cleaned, pawls and springs checked, greased with the right grease rather than whatever was in the locker. Once a season on a charter boat.

Sail repair
A torn seam or a blown UV strip goes to a sail loft in Marmaris and comes back in two or three days. We take it off and put it back on.
