The Gulf of Gökova

Almost enclosed, pine forest to the waterline, and a meltemi that funnels down the gulf from the west every afternoon. Orak Island for the snorkelling, Çökertme for a village dinner, the Seven Islands for a day of gunkholing, English Harbour where British warships hid in 1944, and Sedir Island with the golden sand that occurs nowhere else.

Crossing to Kos and the Dodecanese

Kos harbour is about two hours from Bodrum on a gulet and under an hour on a motor yacht. From there Kalymnos, Pserimos and Leros open up. Private charter only; cabin charters stay in Turkish waters. Six weeks' notice for the clearances.

€9,400 to €28,000 a week for a crewed gulet, full board included, depending on the boat and the month. A single cabin on a shared departure is €690 to €1,150 per person per week.

Bodrum or Marmaris — which should we choose?

Bodrum for the Gulf of Gökova and the Greek Dodecanese; Marmaris for the Hisarönü Gulf, Bozburun and the short crossing to Symi and Rhodes. Gökova is the more sheltered of the two and the better first charter.
